Cotopaxi is considered the world’d highest active volcano, closely ranked with Llullaillaco and Ojos del Salado. It is also one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with over fifty erruptions since 1738.

Situated in Ecuador, it is 5,897 m high and it is part of the volcanic chain that surrounds the Pacific plate, known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. It has one of the few equatorial glaciers in the world.

Worshipped by the locals since times immemorial, Cotopaxi was considered by Andean Indians as the Holy Mountain, its summit being the place where the gods lived.
