kaliakra Photos

KALIAKRA is a nature reserve.

Situated on the shore of the Black Sea, in the Northern part of the Bulgarian coast, Kaliakra is a narrow headland, with vertical rocks that descend into the water as deep as seventy meters. Dolphins and cormorants can be seen here.

The place is filled with legends, one of them being that of the 40 maids who flung themselves into the sea so as not be captured by the Turks. Another legend features St Nicholas, the patron of seamen, helped to escape the Ottomans by God himself, who stretched the land under the Saint’s feet, into the sea. This is how the Kaliakra Cape was formed, according to legend.

The sea battle of 1791 took place here, during the Russo-Turkish war of 1787-1792.

The Kaliakra Glacier on Livingstone Island in Antarctica was named after this cape.
