Situated in Egypt, Assyut is one of Christianity’s sacred places. According to tradition, this is where the Holy Family with Baby Jesus stayed when in Egypt. The monastery is built around the cave in which they are said to have lived, and the cave itself is home to a chapel whose patron is St Mary. The chapel dates back to the 1st century.
The monastery is an important pilgrimage site for all Christians, especially during Holy Virgin festivals.
