The Belgian capital is also known as the capital of the European Union, hosting the major political institutions of the Union.
Brussels has very diverse architecture, from medieval to postmodern, with some remarkable palaces, buildings, churches and monuments as Grand Place, St. Michael and Gudula Cathedral, the Royal Palace, Laken Castle or Manneken and Atomium. The Grand Place is the central square of the town and it is considered the most beautiful one in Europe. Dating back to the 13-14th century, it was destroyed in 1695 by the French army and was rebuild in the following years. Brussels is also home to famous buildings designed by the architect Victor Horta: the Tassel, Solvay and Van Eetvelde Hotels, as well as the Horta residence and studio, all remarkable Art Nouveau landmarks.
