EVEREST (Chomolungma or Qomolangma in Tibetan and Sagarmatha in Nepali) is the highest mountain in the world with a peak at 8,848 metres. It is situated at the border between Tibet and Nepal.
Sagarmatha National Park includes Mount Everest and covers an area of 124,400 hectares in Nepal and is a UNESCO world heritage site.
This is a dramatic area of high, geologically young mountains and glaciers of exceptional natural beauty. This park contains the world's highest ecologically characteristic flora and fauna and is home to several rare species such as the snow leopard and the red panda.
There are approximately 2,500 Sherpa people living within the park. The people are primarily Tibetan Buddhists.
Mount Everest has two main climbing routes, the southeast ridge from Nepal (the more frequently used) and the north ridge from Tibet.
