Rovaniemi is the capital and largest town in Lapland. Situated at the Arctic Circle, the town is renowned for its aurora borealis – also known as the Northern Lights – as well as the polar nights and the temperatures that are extremely low here. During winter the sun barely rises and days can be very dark, and in the middle of the summer, the sun is up almost all night. The lowest temperature ever recorded here is negative 45.3 Celsius.
The symbol of the town is the Jatkankynttila bridge over the Kemijoki river, spotted by fires kept burning all the time.
