SALZBURG is a UNESCO world heritage site, for its historical centre.
This Austrian town has a very interesting architecture, combining Flamboyant Gothic with Baroque, in an encounter between North and South caused by the love of Archbishop Wolf Dietrich for the Italian Gothic style. With its Baroque architecture designed by Italian architects Vincenzo Scamozzi (from Venice) and Santini Solari, the town has one of the best preserved historical centres in the Germanic world.
Salzburg was founded around the year 700 by missionary Rupert and it was the capital of Bavarian rulers during the reign of Charlemagne.
One of its monuments is Hohensalzburg Castle, which dominates the town. The construction of this medieval fortress began in 1077 and it took several centuries for it to be expanded to its current size. The wall and tower were added in 1462.
Salzburg is where composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born, on 27 January, 1756, in a house on Getreidegasse no.9.
